چکیده

A reactive distillation plant is one of the most important and “delicate” functional components of a complex chemical plant. While its steady state modeling and simulation tend to become a standard today by using some well known dedicated software tools, only little is known about the dynamic simulation in the open literature. This paper presents the principles for a modern modeling approach with respect to reactive distillation processes, including the potential phase splitting detection. It is based on a classical model (pseudo-homogeneous) in connection with a robust and reliable phase splitting algorithm (through homotopy-continuation method), performed at each simulation step. A simple case-study (by applying this approach to a reactive distillation column for waste water treatment) is briefly presented. All simulation scenarios revealed a good agreement between simulation results and the real system behavior, much better than using a classical pseudo-homogeneous mathematical model.

Dynamic Simulation of Reactive Distillation Processes with Liquid-liquid Phase Splitting

This paper presents a modern modeling approach for reactive distillation processes with potential phase splitting. It is based on a classical model (pseudo-homogeneous) in connection with a robust and reliable phase splitting algorithm (through homotopy-continuation method), performed at each simulation step. Model validation stage and a simple case-study (by applying the new approach to a reac...

Non-equilibrium stage modeling and non-linear dynamic effects in the synthesis of TAME by reactive distillation

Tertiary-amyl methyl ether (TAME) is a potential gasoline additive that can be advantageously synthesized using the reactive distillation (RD) technology. This work emphasizes on non-linear effects in dynamic simulations of reactive distillation column. For certain configurations, dynamic simulation with equilibrium stage (EQ) model leads to sustained oscillations (limit cycles) which have been...

Dynamic Simulation of Distillation Sequences in Dew Pointing Unit of South Pars Gas Refinery

The understanding of the dynamic behavior of distillation columns has received considerable attention because distillation is one of the most widely used unit operations in chemical process industries. This paper reports a dynamic simulation study of the possible distillation columns sequences of Dew pointing unit in the second phase of South Pars Gas Refinery. In this unit, three columns are u...

A Systematic Approach on the Dynamic Modeling of Reactive Distillation Processes The standard mathematical model (NPHSP)

This work addresses the major problem of reactive distillation (RD) processes mathematical modeling, revealing also why detecting the presence of a three-phase regime (vapour-liquid-liquid) on the column stages is of utmost importance. In this paper, the authors present in detail their starting modeling approach, which describes the behaviour of a “classic” RD process (where the potential liqui...

Conceptual Design of n-Butyl Acetate Synthesis Process by Reactive Distillation Using Residue Curve Maps

Residue curve maps are a powerful tool for the preliminary design of Reactive Distillation (RD). In this study, residue curve maps of the n-butyl acetate synthesis reaction were calculated based on the Langmuir–Hinshelwood–Hougen–Watson kinetic and UNIQUAC models to calculate the physical properties of the system. The results showed that the unstable node branch emerged from the n-butyl ace...
